Hurricanes are powerful storm systems that form over warm ocean water and move toward land. In the Atlantic basin, hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. In the Pacific, it runs May 15 through November 30.
For those of us along the Gulf of America, hurricanes are not a rare event — they’re part of life. The Gulf’s warm water is essentially hurricane fuel, which is why storms can strengthen quickly, sometimes in a matter of hours. Historically, a large percentage of U.S. hurricane landfalls occur along the Gulf Coast, and many of the most destructive storms on record have impacted this region.
Hurricanes bring more than wind.
The biggest dangers are often storm surge, flooding, and prolonged power outages — even from storms that never reach major hurricane status.
This isn’t meant to scare you. It’s meant to prepare you.
Being informed and organized before a storm forms makes all the difference. Below you’ll find a Hurricane Information Sheet and Tracking Chart you can print and keep on hand throughout the season.
Prepare early. Track often. Don’t wait until the spaghetti models hit social media.
Stay safe.
